SUB: RECORDING OF 8 DIGIT ACCOUNTING CODES ON TR-6 CHALLANS BY SERVICE TAX ASSESSESSEES - REGARDING. 1. Service Tax assessees are hereby informed that a new comprehensive directory of service tax with 8-digit serial codes has been notified by the office of the Principal Chief Controller of Accounts, CBE&C. The same is enclosed herewith. This has been done to overcome the difficulties that field formations were facing in generating STC numbers with the introduction of 'SAPS' software, which cannot accommodate the 9 digit and 11 digit 'Head of Accounts' presently being quoted by assessees. 2. It is clarified that Service Tax assessees should quote 8 digit codes only for the type and category of taxes paid by them and not the 9 or 11 digit codes. For all other purposes also, only 8 digit Code is to be utilised. The 9 digit and 11 digit Head of Accounts have been totally removed from the Directory of Accounts Head of Service Tax. 3. All members of the Trade and Industry are requested to give vide publicity of the contents of this Trade Notice amongst their members.
